Success!

In between two storms, District 4-C6 Lions had an absolutely picture-perfect day to walk the Embarcadero for City of Hope Walk for Hope. We were a colorful group and stood out in the crowd of pinks with our purple shirts and pink boas and scarves and pink sprayed hair.

A picture is worth a thousand words and I'm not going to even attempt to say what a grand time we all had. See for yourself the smiles on our faces by viewing my Photoshow entitled Lions for Hope. Click here to view or click on the Photo Show to the right and be sure and make it full screen. If you'd like a DVD copy, let me know, and I'll be happy to burn one for you.

We had about 20 walkers from the District and we were the second highest fundraiser with 56 team members. Gallo Sales was number one with 210 members. We'll have to see what we can do next year to top them. We have 30 days to continue to add to our donations, so if you have some friends, relatives or neighbors who forgot, there's still time.

Thank you to all who joined the team and donated to the team and made it a huge success. The original goal was set at $5,000 and we far surpassed that goal and I believe we'll top the $8,000 mark. Thanks, too, for the enthusiastic support of Gov. Bob, First Lady Suzie, City of Hope Chair Maureen Moore and City of Hope Committee Member Joe Pugliese who said go for it when I asked if I could start a District 4-C6 Lions team. And a great big thank you to all the walkers who drove to San Francisco very early on a dark Saturday morning, not knowing if it was going to rain or not, and who made it a very fun day.

Awesome job, Lions!

Thank you!

Wow, is all I can say. We are over the $7,000 mark, thanks to the marvelous fundraising skills of those of you on the team and all who supported you. We still have 30 days past the day of the walk to keep those contributions coming in, so don't stop now! After 30 days, City of Hope will tally up the totals and your prizes will be mailed to you.

Don't worry about the weather. According to the forecast, Saturday should be on the chilly side but at least not wet. So wear layers and comfortable shoes. E-mail me if you have any questions.

You should have received your letter from City of Hope enclosing your walk bib. Best way to wear it is to attach it to your clothing with safety pins, front or back.

We'll see you Saturday morning between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. at Applebee's, Highway 280 and Saratoga Ave. We will leave at 7:00 to get to the walk by 8:00. If you're not carpooling, meet us at Justin Herman Plaza where there will be a staging area for teams and we'll take our team photo. Parking at Embarcadero 4 should not be a problem. Follow the directions found on your walk bib.

Again, a great big thank you for all your hard work!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Even though there's less than two weeks until the walk you still have time to increase our donation to City of Hope.

I purchased three cartons of Awesome See's Candy Bars for around $15 and I have them displayed with a October is Breast Cancer Awareness month sign asking for a donation of $5 each. There's three delicious flavors so they usually go pretty fast: Awesome Nut & Chew (my favorite), Awesome Peanut Brittle (yummy) and Awesome Walnut Bar (with dark chocolate - decadent!). The cost is $15 but you could get $120 (or more) in donations.

I have a discount card with See's so let me know if you're interested in this easy way to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Heading for $7,000

As of right now, District 4-C6 has raised $5,932, just $68 short of the new goal of $6,000 after surpassing the $5,000 goal last week. We've actually surpassed the $6,000 mark because some checks are going in and won't show up on the final tally for a couple of weeks.
  • Keep those donations coming in.
  • We still have a couple of weeks.
  • If you can't join the team, ask family and friends to support you and sponsor you. Every little bit helps.
  • Send checks in right away instead of waiting so it will show on the team page.

Sunnyvale Host 100%!

Governor Bob's club came through on its pledge to have 100% of its club sign up for the team. As of this moment, out of 48 team members, 23 are men, just about half! What a great showing of support for City of Hope in its efforts to raise funds for breast cancer research, treatment and education. Great job, Lions!

$4,705 raised so far. We're still No. 2 but the Mighty Mustangs are catching up.

Getting there

Probably the easiest way to get to the event on October 13 is to carpool and caravan. Registration is between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. where you will receive your City of Hope t-shirts and medals. E-mail me if you'd like to carpool or caravan. ljpugliese@hotmail.com.

From San Jose, take 101 to 280 and drive past AT&T Park along the Embarcadero, left on Washington, left on Drumm, left on Clay, parking at Four Embarcadero parking garage, which puts you an elevator ride from Justin Herman Plaza.

To view driving directions to the Embarcadero Center parking garages, please click here.

What do I do with checks?

The easiest way for someone to donate to you is to donate online. But some people don't want to go online or use a credit card and will issue you a check made out to City of Hope. What to do?

Mail the check with a sponsor form or simply put a note on the check with the

  • team name, (District 4-C6 Lions)
  • the location (San Francisco)
  • and your name as the participant
You may download a Sponsor Form by clicking here.

Mail to:

City of Hope's Walk for Hope
Attn: Peng Garbo
National Events Department
1055 Wilshire Boulevard, 11th Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90017

One check may be written with multiple participant names designated on the Sponsor Form.

We're No. 2!

Well, we finally moved ahead of Smile and we're less than $2,000 behind Gallo Sales. As of today our team has raised $3,645!

Way to go, Lions!

What's making us so successful is that as people are joining the team, they're asking their circle of friends, family and clubs to make a donation to them on their personal web page. We can do much more by encouraging your club members to simply join the team. You don't have to walk and you don't have to pledge large sums of money.

Gallo Sales is No. 1 because of the number of people who have joined their team.

Join us by clicking here. Then click on Join Our Team on the left side of the page. If you have questions, go to the post How to Join below.

Join the team, it's easy

With the blessings of Governor Bob, First Lady Suzie, and City of Hope Chair Maureen Moore, Linda Pugliese started the District 4-C6 Team for the City of Hope Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer to be held in San Francisco on October 13, 2007. The object is to get as many people from District 4C6 to join the team and raise money to support breast cancer research, treatment and education.

The best way to do it is to go online, register as a team member, and your $30 registration fee will give you a personal web page that you can customize to suit you. You don't need to commit to walking long distances or raising large sums of money.

You can even do a "virtual walk" and still be a team member. Through City of Hope’s Virtual Walk program, individuals all across the country can participate in Walk for Hope without ever leaving their computer. When you become a Virtual Walker, you will be joining a community of online supporters who are saying yes to forever eradicating the disease.

  • The more team members we get, the more we raise for City of Hope through District 4-C6
  • The potential grows as more team members ask family and friends to donate through their personal web page to City of Hope

As of today's date, August 15, District 4-C6 is ranked third in the San Francisco area and two of our team members are in the top 5 fundraisers. The number one team became number one because of the sheer numbers of its team members. Let's make District 4-C6 No. 1!

You can become a part of a national movement to create a legacy of health for our daughters and generations to come. Walk with us!
