2nd Place for District 4-C6 Lions!

With the rain threatening, Lions for Hope met at Applebee's parking lot on a dark, but dry, Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. to drive to San Francisco for our second annual Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer for the City of Hope. There were about 30 brave souls wearing their purple t-shirts, pink boas, and pink sprayed hair representing the 90-member District 4-C6 Lions team in yet another gorgeous day along The Embarcadero. We had the Lions spirit "deep in our hearts, up in our heads, and down in our feet" as we strolled leisurely for 3 miles.

We came in second place with $13,785 raised to date, but we will have until the end of the year to make our check to City of Hope even larger when we present it at City of Hope's Lions Appreciation Day. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so keep the momentum going and if you haven't donated, please go to http://www.tinyurl.com/lionsforhope and give as generously as you can, whether it's $10 or $1,000.

Scales of Justice Lydia Montano's clan was present, all five of them, with little Rebeca sporting her well-deserved pink halo for raising $285. Way to go, Rebeca! Denise from Almaden Super was there with her little dog on a leash. And of course, all the men looked great with their pink-sprayed hair. PDG Carl Anderson had a pink goatee and accompanied his wife Elaine, another star in raising money. We had a representative of District 4-C4 attending, Sandee Ige. Thanks for joining, Sandee, and next year we'll be joining forces against Gallo.

We had quite a few folks from "over the hill," Jean Westcott and her daughter Ginger from Carmel; the Bustichis from Scotts Valley, Irene, Harvey and Lisa; City of Hope Chair Mo Moore from Freedom; PDG Denny and star fundraiser Jan Miller from Salinas; June Fauson from Marina. They had to get up mighty early in the morning and that takes dedication, especially in light of the threatening weather.

Joyce Valdez from East Valley bopped along in her bouncy fancy shoes, and Jan McClure was there with her two lovely daughters. Bob Long and Valerie were on their way and unfortunately had an incident with their car on the way and couldn't make it. We hope everything is okay! Val Isaacson and Jeff Spedding from Almaden Super were first-timers and had a good time. It was Scales of Justice Pat Khan's first time, too, and she was in great form.

Hugh Donagher and Brian Rountree from Sunnyvale always show great enthusiasm. Frances Maglalang walked and took Ray's place this year. Hopefully they'll both be there next year. PCS Karen Fillmore couldn't make it but her daughter took her place. Two non-Lion friends, Debbie Landi and Ilyse Zimmerman joined us wearing their purple Lions t-shirts. Thanks for your support for Lions!

And of course, Immediate Past District Governor Bob and Suzie, along with current District Governor Marlene and Vice District Governor Joe were, as always, in attendance and major supporters.

A big thank you to all of you who joined the team and had to walk "virtually," especially those who reached out and added to the total, like Heather Ribbs, who raised $1400. You helped us to get our second place prize, a basket of Bert's Bees goodies, which will be raffled off at some time soon for even more funds going to City of Hope.

Congratulations, Lions!

Great job, Lions!

You should all have received your walk bibs from City of Hope by now. Be sure and take them to the walk so that you can receive your free City of Hope white t-shirt. If you haven't received your bib, give me a call and we can check it out to make sure you get one. It will have the driving directions on it and a coupon for parking at 4 Embarcadero Center Garage.

We will be meeting between 6:45 and 7:00 at Applebee's on Saratoga Avenue at 280 and leaving for San Francisco between 7:00 and 7:15. For those of you who will drive up and not carpool with us, we will meet before the walk for a team picture. Look for the purple shirts!

Our purple District 4-C6 t-shirts have arrived and I will take them to the walk for those of you who ordered them. They are $15. If you want to get them before the walk, give us a call and you can pick them up.

IPDG Bob is threatening to wear his pink tutu and Hugh Donagher will be bringing his pink beads. We'll have our pink hair spray and boas, too. Even though this is for a serious cause, there's no reason we can't have fun and stir things up. Wear funny hats or bobbles on your head, angel wings, whatever. Some of the walks I've been on have had some outrageous costumes. This is great publicity for District 4-C6 Lions.

Last year at this time, if you look in the archives of this blog, you'll see that on September 30 we had $5,932 and this year we show $9,570 with almost $2,000 in the pipeline (sent to LA for processing), a total of over $11,000. We have done phenomenally well, and I am so proud and grateful to you for making this a success. We have gone ABOVE AND BEYOND last year. Congratulations, Lions! We have until the end of the year to make our donation to City of Hope larger and perhaps BEAT Gallo Sales.

Last year was an incredible year, starting off with a goal of $5,000 and more than doubling it to $10,585! This year we have the addition of District 4-C1 Lions Team, headed by Team Captain, VDGE Becki Stange. Way to go, Becki, for answering our challenge and joining us for a great showing of Lionism in raising funds for City of Hope for research, education and treatment of breast cancer.

You can use your credit card to sign up.
